WorkingBuildings Supports National Conference on Building Commissioning Green Initiatives

5/15/2007

ATLANTA, Ga. (May 15, 2007) – WorkingBuildings (WB) continues its dedication to green initiatives as the Green Globe sponsor for the 15th Annual National Conference on Building Commissioning (NCBC).

“WorkingBuildings was able to offset 220 tons of carbon emissions,” said Weiss, “That is equivalent to taking 44 cars off the road for one year.” WB is a global leader in total building commissioning services ensuring that design, construction and operation of buildings work together to conserve resources and deliver a building that works.

“As a well respected building commissioning firm, WorkingBuildings is establishing standards for the way businesses must operate while taking their environmental impact into consideration,” said Michael L. Weiss, president of WorkingBuildings. “Conferences are huge consumers of resources and have the potential to generate mass amounts of carbon emissions and other waste. As guardians of energy consumption in the building industry, it is our responsibility to offset our energy usage in every way possible.”

WorkingBuildings practices what they preach by commissioning their headquarters achieving the first LEED Silver-CI certification in Atlanta. Some initiatives employed by WB to achieve silver status are, offsetting their electrical power usage by purchasing wind power from American Wind, using flat screen computer monitors, recycling construction waste, using recycled carpet, energy efficient lighting, and choosing a centrally located office space in relation to where their employees live.

Corporate America is becoming more conscious of their ability to conserve resources and just what it means to their bottom line. The rising cost of oil has caused everyone to reevaluate where they are spending their money and how they can protect their budget. Knowing that you can reduce the cost of operating your building by as much as 20% can mean significant increases in revenue for some companies. Commissioning will not only reduce the amount of energy it takes to operate a building, but can also expand the lifecycle of the equipment operating in the building. The savings can be very meaningful since the lifecycle of some buildings can be hundreds of years.

The purpose of building commissioning is to ensure that a building, whether new construction or many years post construction, meets or exceeds the operational requirements of the owner. All mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems must be working efficiently to ensure occupant comfort, safety and production. Commissioning is vital in the role of conserving resources in construction and occupancy while extending the lifecycle of the building and its support systems.
