Today we face great challenges in the global built environment. The rapid adoption of western building models has allowed for an explosive growth of modern buildings throughout the world. Modern concepts reside in the use of computer models and tools for planning and designing our buildings. Given the power of these tools, buildings are designed and delivered more quickly than ever thought possible. However, without objectivity and insight, the adoption of the western model can also yield unacceptable declines in quality and increased operational cost, premature failure of major building systems and a decline of portfolio value. The quality of buildings delivered by the previous decade has been poor and driven by advocacy. Worldwide markets driven by the adoption of programs such as sustainability have finally matured and must move beyond advocacy and toward real action.
