John McFarland, Vice President & Principal at WorkingBuildings, was selected as the Donor’s Representative for the Living Building Challenge Certified Facility through The Kendeda Fund, an Atlanta-based philanthropic organization.

McFarland will provide guidance and input to The Kendeda Fund while working with Georgia Tech to design and build what will become the first major Living Building Challenge 3.0 certified education and research facility in the Southeast. The project will serve as a living-learning laboratory for students and faculty, providing hands-on educational and research opportunities that will be a model for the region and similar environments around the world.

McFarland’s role will be to represent Kendeda and their values throughout the project. He will review details, designs, and progress to guarantee the Living Building Challenge is being followed and that the project meets goals and vision set forth by the involved parties. Created in 2006, the Living Building Challenge is a rigorous building certification program that is applied to different types of developments, including landscapes and renovations.

As principal of WorkingBuildings, McFarland oversees the team for sustainability, energy modeling and commissioning services on a variety of projects such as Ponce City Market, College Football Hall of Fame, and Trees Atlanta. With his help as a sustainability consultant, WorkingBuildings delivered over 150 sustainable projects and counting.
